Activity 1: Show each solid figure and name it. Discuss the characteristics
of each solid. Which has no flat surfaces, curved surfaces. (Text
pg. 434-437)

Cone
|
A solid figure with
a base that is a circle and a curved surface that meets at a point. (p.
434) |
|
|
Cube
|
A solid figure
with 6 congruent squares as its faces.

cylinder
|
A solid figure
with two congruent circular bases.
|
|
|
Rectangular
Prism
|
A solid whose
faces are all rectangles.
|
|
|
Square
pyramid
|
A solid figure
with a square base and four faces that are triangles.
|
|
|
Triangular
Prism
|
A solid figure with
two bases that are triangles and the other three faces are rectangles. |

Activity 2: New words:
plane
figure - a
figure with only two dimensions(length and width)
solid
figure - a figure that has length, width, and height
face-
a flat surface of a solid that does not roll.
edge
- a line segment where two faces of a solid figure meet.
vertex
- The point where two rays meet. The point where the sides of a polygon
meet. The point where three or more edges of a solid figure meet. (plural
- vertices)

Activity 4: Review of Solid Figures
face-
a flat surface of a solid that does not roll.
edge
- a line segment where two faces of a solid figure meet.
vertex
- The point where two rays meet. The point where the sides of a polygon
meet. The point where three or more edges of a solid figure meet. (plural
- vertices)
Toothpicks
Connectors - with
hollow straws, you can use paper clips or thick pipe cleaners, bent and
stuck inside the straw ends to connect two or more together. With
toothpicks you can use clay, play dough, mini-marshmallows, or small jelly
beans as connectors. Make shapes and count the faces, edges, and vertices.

Activity 5:Characteristics of Polygons
Polygon
- a closed plane figure made up of line segments. Each line segment is
a side. The point where the sides meet is called a vertex.
