Introduction

SYMMETRY - A WELL BALANCED ARRANGEMENT OF PARTS.

In this webquest you will learn about
different kinds of symmetry.

Line Symmetry
Rotational Symmetry

Not only will you see the applications in geometric figures,
but you will learn to recognize symmetry in nature.

You will apply what you have learned about
symmetry to create geometric designs.

You will gain a better understanding of how
symmetry is all around us and become more
aware of symmetry in our world.

Task

Your task is to discover all that you can about symmetry from the resources below. Print the Polygon worksheet and alphabet symmetry below, and then identify lines of symmetry. You will then take a simple square of white paper and create a symmetrical snowflake. Follow directions to create a symmetrical quilt design. After completing these activities, you should have a good understanding of symmetry, and be keenly aware of symmetry around us.

Identify Symmetry in Regular Polygons

Identify Symmetry in the Alphabet

Conclusion
Symmetry makes our view of the world pleasing. It is not surprising, therefore, that you were able to discover its use in art, nature, architecture, and the human body. You may be amazed how much symmetry you will recognize with your newly trained eyes. Further exploration may lead you to find symmetry in tessellations and other areas of math.
