Teaching Procedures

Students may approach this unit with some preconceived ideas about career planning.  Friends, parents, brothers and sisters, and other teachers may have influenced how the students think about careers.  Keep in mind that each student is different and that he or she will have different needs, wants, abilities, and goals.

Where to start:
Start the class with a light discussion about careers in general.
Ask the students:
What do you want to do after graduation?
What are your needs and wants?
                            What are your abilities?
Where do you want to be in one year,
                             five years, twenty years?

Encourage the students explore the concepts of self, work, jobs, and careers.

Review the terms the students will need to understand before beginning the assignment.

Explain how the assignment will help them discover their true needs, wants, abilities and goals.

Explain how participation in the exercise can help them have a better life for themselves and their families.

  • Give an overview of the assignment.
  • Tell them your expectations.
  • Give students a written copy of the assignment and rubric.
  • Read the assignment aloud to the class.
  • Answer any questions before they get started.

After the students have completed the assignment, have them discuss their discoveries with the class.  Have students turn in their questionnaires and their written reports for evaluation.
