Course Description:

This science lesson is designed for grades 5-6. Through using this unit on volcanoes, students will develop background knowledge of volcanoes. Activities vary from web quests, lessons, cooperative group activities, and projects.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Describe the characteristics and identify the three types of volcanoes.

2. Explain how shield, composite, and cinder cones are formed.

3. Describe the disastrous and positive effects of volcano eruptions.

4. Describe types of volcanic eruptions.

5. Explain how a volcano model is constructed while giving an accurate account of which natural materials the materials in the model represent.

Course Requirements:

1. Create a model volcano. (50 points)
2. Create a Power Point presentation. (50 points)
3. Student logbook of volcano investigations. (100 points)
4. Complete a Compare/Contrast paper. (100 points)
5. Complete the Web Quest activity on Pompeii. (100 points)

Expectations:

1. Students will be expected to complete all assignments while working in groups, pairs, or individually.
2. Students will be expected to use the Internet responsibly.
3. Students will be expected to turn in materials, such as logbooks to be graded.
4. No late assignments.
