Introduction
GET THAT JOB...THE RESUME'

There are dozens of books on how to prepare a resume and many opinions on what works best. You may have already received excellent guidance from some of your teachers, but let's review.

Your resume tells your story to prospective employers. You can paint a picture describing your background instead of being stuck with limited space on a job application.

The employer receives many resumes and applications. Something has to make him or her notice yours.

Obviously, it must be neat and it must be typed.

GET THAT JOB...THE COVER LETTER OR LETTER OF APPLICATION

Four reasons to send a letter of application

  1. To summarize what you have to offer and introduce your resume'
  2. To find out information about a prospective employer
  3. To contact an employer located in another city
  4. To answer an advertisement

GET THAT JOB...THE APPLICATION

Never go in and ask, "Are you hiring?" Ask to complete an employment application.

Applications vary from simple to complex, depending on the employer. Some questions may irritate and others may please you. Be ready to answer all of them honestly.

Most of the information you will need can be taken directly from your resume' and transferred to the application.

After you review this approach, apply it to your own resume and application.
