The gulper eel is also known as the pelican eel because of its enormous
mouth. Gulpers do not have scales or a swim bladder like most fish. They
are usually black, and grow up to 30 inches long. Its mouth, with its tiny,
numerous teeth and huge lower jaw, can be stretched to eat prey bigger
than itself. Sometimes it swims with its mouth open to feed on plankton.
Some gulpers have a reddish light on the ends of their tails to attract
prey.
