MODULE 8
How to Use an Atlas
If you need to locate a particular city (or any other location) on an atlas, follow these steps:

Step 1

  • Find the city in the index of the atlas and read the reference information.  For example:  Baton Rouge, LA  D5    117
  • In this listing, the first number (D5) is the grid code showing the location of the city on the map.
  • The next number is the page number (117).
Step 2
  • Turn to the page listed in the reference.  In this case you would turn to the map on page 117.
Step 3
  • Horizontally across the top and bottom of the map will be letters.  In this case you are looking for the letter D.  Find the letter D on the map.
Step 4
  • Up and down both sides of the map will be numbers.  Locate the number from your reference.  In this case, find the number 5.
Step 5
  • The intersection where the letter and number meet on the map is the approximate location of the city.
