Introduction
The 18th century
was a time of revolution. Revolutionaries were fighting for freedom from
oppressive governments in Europe and American colonists fought to gain
freedom from English rule. While political change was altering the lives
of millions of people in America and Europe, another “revolution” was occurring.
This revolution took the economic system out of the field and put it into
the factory. This revolution came to be known as the “Industrial
Revolution.”
The industrial revolution
has its beginnings in 18th century England. The “revolution” found its
way to the North American colonies where inventors, machinist, and visionaries
pushed forward the revolution. While most revolution last for a relatively
short time this revolution continued throughout the 19th century.
Three factors played
an integral part in the Industrial Revolution: coal, iron, and steam. Coal
being a plentiful natural resource in England was a great source of fuel
for the steam engine forged from iron. The invention of the steam
engine was the catalyst for many future inventions.
Society was greatly
effected with the invention of many new innovations. What types of
improvements were made? How did the inventions change people's way of life?
Did things become easier or more difficult? Who were the innovators and
what did they create? All these questions will be answered as you
complete tour this webquest.

Conclusion
During the 18th and
early 19th century great changes were taking place in economic societies.
People went from working in cottages and fields of rural areas, to manning
mechanical machines in factories in the cities. The changes effect
population, economics and life ways throughout Europe and the Americas.
This webquest highlighted only a few innovations and the way they changed
life. As you toured the information you learned how "necessity became
the mother of invention."
